Top Picks Preamps & Processors

Even with our Home Theater Systems Buying Guide and our “best” picks above, maybe you’re not sure what to get, or what to do next. No surprise there, home theaters come in many, many variations… and shopping for the right one for you, your house, and your budget can be a bit intimidating. We'd suggest you take a look at our guide for Best Projectors. There are plenty of options there for different needs and budgets; we're confident you'll find one that fits you.

In our CPU Guides, we give you our pick of some of the best processors available, supplying data from our reviews. Our Best CPUs for Gaming guide targets most of the common system-build price points that typically pair a beefy graphics card with a capable processor, with the best models being suitable for streaming and encoding on the fly. Besides the React Sound Bar, the set includes the React Subwoofer and a pair of SR2 Wireless Surround Speakers.

And of course, to see any of those charts in more detail, check our original review. We’re recapping coverage, so we’re pulling charts sparingly and as needed from a year’s worth of CPU reviews. For those older pieces, keep in mind that some of the tests are using older data. For full detail on any CPU in this video, you’ll want to check our original reviews.

I’ve also decided to allow all the still current projectors reviewed in the 2016 and 2017 report to compete again in this 2018 Home Theater Projectors Report. Many projectors are now in 2-year or even 3-year cycles, so if we don’t allow last year’s winner to compete in a class, but it’s still current, then we might end up giving an award to a newer, but less capable projector. In the past, the only projectors we included were those we reviewed and virtually identical projectors. A classic example of this would be Epson’s Home Cinema 2040 and 2045 models.

Professional Design & Installation

At $1995 there’s a pure 1080p Sony – the VPL-HW45, then there’s the Optoma UHD60 – a 4K UHD (2716×1528 x 2), and a 1080p pixel shifter, the Epson HC4000 around the same price. Decisions get murky – the Sony, for example, is the least natively sharp of the three (as expected, being the lowest in resolution – no pixel shifting), but it has an excellent picture. The Epson and Optoma both handle 4K, but the Epson is loaded with features, the Optoma is natively higher resolution… Well, that’s why we give out more than one award in each class. When it comes to this generation and family of processors, one word should spring to mind – overclocking. The insane AMG Ryzen processors were launched at the end of last year and since then people have been testing their overclocking potential.

These start at eight cores, and will all feature 44 PCIe lanes as well as a variety of cache levels which should make them an interesting comparison to the current Skylake-X platforms. For anyone looking to play games at 1440p or 4K in GPU bound scenarios, or process video, or push a multithreaded CPU workload, the AMD Ryzen X is tough to ignore. As a reminder, it wasn’t long ago that we were buying i3 CPUs in the 6th and 7th gen for $160, which were always a tough purchase to justify against the then-incumbent Intel i5s at around $200. Although threads aren’t everything, the higher thread-count R and its reasonable overclock frequencies do establish the product as a lightweight champion with versatility for gaming and some production tasks.

So if you are on a budget, this is the type of CPU to go for, if you want to run demanding tasks. And with a power consumption of 140 Watt, the processor is power-efficient as well, putting it in “one of the best” list for sure. And these are most likely the primary reasons why this CPU is priced at around $2500 – you get a lot of bang for your buck. Based on the Skylake technology, the W-2195 Xeon has been originally created to service single-socket workstations. The Xeon W has 18 cores and 36 thread with a 64 bit architecture and it has a 25 MB L3 cache.

Similarly with AMD, a 12-core Threadripper at $431 with a $299 motherboard and ~$200 for memory is only really valid with a high-end graphics card if the rest of the system is OK with being mediocre to average. AMD’s APU also comes bundled with a very decent stock cooler, which would also be an additional Intel system cost. With the extra money saved, going after some high speed memory to aid the graphics would be a good idea, which would also carry over if/when a big discrete GPU purchase is made in the future. Building this system in mind, we actually came super under budget, with a full cost of $435.

Featuring improvements in a reworked cache topology and a new mesh interconnections, the 8180 is the type of device which can offer increased scalability and performance. Bowers & Wilkins comes strong to the party with much more affordable speakers that have many design elements derived from the highly lauded 800 Diamond V3 speakers. Close your eyes and take an auditory trip to Abbey Road Studios with these sex-tastic overachievers from the U.K.

You can also plug an Ethernet cable into the sound bar or one of the speakers, and then the system will create its own dedicated wireless network to share audio and control information. For a gamer who might be interested in streaming, or doing multiple tasks at the same time, the six-core Ryzen X is eminently suitable. The gaming experience should be pitched for a very good quality 1920x1080 environment or a mid-quality 2560x1440 setup, with future upgrade options either on the CPU or processor. $ 2159 using Stock Cooler$ 2192So we went a bit beyond budget in order to fit in the RTX 2080 Ti.

And they have the solution to your speaker needs that match nicely with today's slim OLED, QLED, and LED 4K HDTVs that provides audio to match the quality of the best the video world has to offer. These wireless over-ear headphones ended up being the pick of the litter from publisher Jerry Del Colliano, who reviewed a whole slew of headphones in this category. They are not heavy on your head or hot over time and have the most even-tempered, non-boomy sound out there at the price point. High-speed HDMI cables, enough speaker wire to connect all of the speakers, and an RCA cable long enough to connect your subwoofer to your receiver. For music lovers, a system like this can change how you enjoy your favorite records.

Also, when we speak of “street price,” we are referring to the typical price when the projector is sold by authorized dealers. There’s always some low baller, and sometimes they offer gray market goods and therefore not full US warranties, so we won’t let them distort the normal selling price for purposes of evaluating value. We routinely change the price points for the classes as best seems to suit the group of projectors we are dealing with. For example, a few years back, our “Entry Level” class included projectors under $2000. Since then, because of changes in the market – especially lower prices in general – we started an Under $1000 class for Entry Level.

Panasonic Announces New 2020 Education and Installation Projectors

We spent a lot of time in late 2018 reviewing all of the reference 65-inch sets from all of the major display manufacturers, but this LED offering from Sony is so close in performance to the reference level sets that we couldn't believe it. Big, bright, smart, and sexy--you get nearly all the performance of a reference UHD display for less than half the price. For those looking to leave the world of physical discs, this Linux-based server is a slick way to do so. With high-quality streaming and insanely good control of your ripped music, this $1,400 music server replaces an old Oppo, a Mac Mini, and more. Finished in a glorious gloss white, Paradigm's more entry-level floorstanding speakers just don't feel that entry-level. These speakers can hang with the big boys and have the looks to match really well-appointed rooms.

The award for Best Overall Value goes to AMD’s R this year, which receives the award for its new $160 price-point and its high-marks performance in both gaming and lightweight production workloads. We originally reviewed the R here, although new numbers were published with our 9980XE review. Sure, we know that plenty of lower resolution 720p projectors are still sold, and are the bulk of the under $500 market, but we have the ability to review only so many projectors a year . We never review enough of the lower resolution lamp-based ones to do real comparisons. We will, however, be publishing a separate report of 1080p and lower resolution Pico and Pocket projectors in the coming months.
